Minister for Police and Corrective Services
The Honourable Judy Spence
Minister for Corrective Services Judy Spence has announced two companies will work with Queensland Corrective Services to manufacture water tanks at the Woodford Correctional Centre.
“In April the Premier and I announced the government was seeking private water tank companies to engage with us in a water tank manufacturing project at Woodford prison,” Ms Spence said.
“I am please to announce that two companies, Linpac Rotational Mouldings Pty Ltd and Slimline Rainwater Tanks Pty Ltd are the successful tenders for this project.
“Linpac will manufacture polyethylene water tanks at the prison while Slimline will manufacture metal tanks.”
Ms Spence said both companies propose to make more tanks than the government’s original proposal of 50 tanks per week and will employ and train around 95 prisoners each day in the manufacture of water tanks.
“Working with prisoners these companies propose to manufacture a total of up to more than 330 water tanks per week once fully operational.”
“This project has enormous benefits for Queensland, the two companies involved and for the prisoners who will be taught special skills which can they can use when they leave prison.
“Water tank manufacturers have told us there is a massive skills shortage in the industry and this project will give prisoners vital skills they can use when they leave prison.
“The companies will work with prisoners out of six workshops in the Woodford prison which can be made available for both manufacturing operations.”
Ms Spence said this project would not impact on the existing workforce of either company and would not provide serious competition to other water tank manufacturers.
“The number of tanks we are proposing to make at Woodford prison will help reduce the waiting period for household water tanks which can be up to 22 weeks.”
Ms Spence said the first water tanks are expected to roll off production lines in early November.
