SMART STATE SHINES FOR UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

Faced with the challenges of a fast growing economy, the United Arab Emirates is looking to the Smart State to learn about good governance and strategic planning, Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie announced today.

Mr Beattie welcomed 45 senior government representatives from the Dubai School of Government who are attending a two-day Leaders Forum in Brisbane organised by the Queensland Government.

“It is great recognition of the Smart State and it will help build on our already strong trading relationship,” Mr Beattie said.

“In 2005-06 Queensland exported more than $118 million in merchandise goods to the United Arab Emirates and now we have the opportunity to share our knowledge and expertise,” he said.

Khaled El Gohary, Manager of the Executive Education Unit in the Dubai School of Government, said Queensland was chosen because “it is facing the same development and challenges that Dubai is facing. The Dubai Government Leaders are keen to learn from the Queensland Government's best practice solutions to these challenges.”

Opening the two-day forum on Thursday and Friday, July 12-13, will be Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson.

“Speaking at the forum will be a number of Queensland Government experts who will share their experience relating to infrastructure development, water conservation, tourism and transport,” Mr Wilson said.

The Dubai School of Government has identified Queensland and Singapore as Governments that have successfully tackled and are continuing to deal with critical infrastructure issues in vibrant economies which are also experiencing unprecedented growth

“The participants will discuss with senior Queensland Government officials some of the prominent challenges they may face over the next decade and examine solutions to tackle them,” Mr Wilson said.

The Dubai School of Government is a leading research and teaching Institution in the UAE that focuses on public policy and administration in developing leaders to build and modernise the economy.
