Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
PINE RIVERS JOBSEEKERS BUILDING FUTURE FOR SELF AND COMMUNITY
Queensland Government funding of over $234,000 for jobseekers to gain on-the-job construction skills will be just one benefit to the Pine Rivers community in a project delivered by the Construction Training Centre.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Kurwongbah Linda Lavarch said the Centre had received $234,180 from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative towards the paid employment of 12 participants for the construction and landscaping of an emergency youth accommodation complex in Pine Rivers.
“This project is a wonderful example of what can happen when state, federal and local government, and community organisations, combine their resources to make a difference in an area,” said Mr Mickel.
“Providing 20-weeks of on-the-job skills and paid work for long-term jobseekers to step up into the construction industry is delivering on local needs for these people and their community.”
The project has drawn together a number of partners including the Australian Department of Transport and Regional Services, which has contributed $547,754, Lions International ($415,971), Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund ($99,975), Department of Sport and Recreation Community Gambling Benefit Fund ($30,000), Building and Construction Industry Training Fund ($27,413), Construction Training Queensland ($27,000) and Pine Rivers Shire Council ($20,000).
Member for Kurwongbah Linda Lavarch said although Queensland’s booming economy has helped cut the state’s unemployment rate to a 30-year low of 3.5 per cent, as the workforce ages the state is going to need all the people it can get participating in the workforce.
“The key to that is to help people build the skills needed by employers and industry,” she said.
“The Lions Life Skills Centre - Community Jobs Program will also increase the
Pine Rivers Shire's ability to provide crisis accommodation, social and welfare support services to highly disadvantaged young people.”
Construction Training Centre’s CEO Phil Diver said the project would be of great benefit to disadvantaged and homeless youth in Pine Rivers.
“The complex will provide specialist emergency accommodation and training facilities to allow young people to gain technical and job skills to enhance their employment prospects.
“We want the jobseekers on this project to gain meaningful future employment within the construction industry, so accredited training will be provided from the Certificate III in General Construction (Concreting and Steel Fixing Competencies), and the Certificate I Workplace Access.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
122,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the
skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
