The Honourable Rod Welford

FAST-TRACK YOUR CAREER AT THE QUEENSLAND ACADEMIES

Talented high school students interested in attending one of the three specialist Queensland Academies are invited to attend an information evening on 17 July in Brisbane.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the academies gave students a chance to fast-track their studies and study with like-minded students.

“The Queensland Academies are an exciting new educational opportunity for students interested in a range of careers – from multi-media designer or architect to engineer, doctor or medical researcher,” Mr Welford said.

“In fact, some of the careers that these students will end up pursuing probably haven’t even been invented yet.

“The Queensland Academies, which opened this year in Brisbane at Toowong and Kelvin Grove, offer a new level of education never before seen in the state.

“The academies give young people the chance to study alongside their high-achieving peers, and at the same time access university facilities and courses before they even finish school.”

Mr Welford said there were limited places for Year 10 students available for next year at the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology at Toowong and the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries at Kelvin Grove.

The Queensland Academy for Health Sciences, which will open on the Gold Coast in 2008, has places available for Year 10 and 11 students.

“I encourage students who wish to attend any of the three academies, and their parents, to attend the information evening next week,” Mr Welford said.

“It will give them the opportunity to meet the academy principals, current students and their parents and find out more about the study program and admissions process.”

The information evening will take place at 7pm, Tuesday 17 July in Room F509,QUT, Victoria Park Road, Kelvin Grove.

The Academy for Creative Industries, located in K Block, 130 Victoria Park Road, Kelvin Grove, is holding an open day from 4pm prior to the information evening.
