Ipswich now has the unwanted record of having the first two cars impounded under the State Government’s new vehicle confiscation laws, Minister for Police Judy Spence said today.

“A man had his car confiscated for 48 hours early on Sunday morning after he was allegedly caught driving while disqualified for a second time since the new laws came into effect on 1 July,” Ms Spence said.

“On top of any costs a court may impose for these alleged offences, this man will have to pay $251 to get his car back from the towing company which is storing his vehicle.

“Last week another man had his car confiscated for 48 hours in Ipswich for twice being caught driving an uninsured and unregistered vehicle.

“If either of these men are caught for these offences for a third time in three years they could have their car confiscated for three months, and if they’re caught a fourth time they could lose their car permanently.”

Ms Spence said the two confiscations reflect the Beattie Government’s determination to take drivers who repeatedly break the law off the road.

“Only 10 days after these laws were introduced we already have two drivers off the road.”

“This sends a clear warning to drivers who repeatedly break the law that they will be caught and their cars will be taken off the road.

“Police will continue to confiscate the vehicles of drivers who repeatedly drink drive, drive while unlicensed, unregistered or disqualified or repeatedly drive illegally modified vehicles.

“Police detected 42,985 of these offences in 2005/06 with 30,621 people caught drink driving and 12, 303 caught driving while disqualified.

The tough new laws are being trialled in the North Coast and Southern police regions which historically have the highest number of road fatalities in the state.

“I have also asked police to begin preparing for their introduction in the South Eastern region, which includes the Gold Coast, in the next six months,” Ms Spence said.
