CCTV Tender Announced For Woorabinda, Palm Island and Aurukun

Upgraded CCTV facilities are one step closer for the Palm Island, Woorabinda and Aurukun watchhouses, Minister for Police Judy Spence said today.

“I am pleased to announce Securecom has been awarded the tender to install CCTV facilities in these watchhouses,” Ms Spence said.

“Securecom is currently purchasing the equipment required for the upgrade of the three watchhouses and is expected to have it installed by August.

“In February the Premier and I announced the government would upgrade or install CCTV facilities in all custodial areas of police stations in Aboriginal Deed of Grant of Trust communities within 12 months,” Ms Spence said.

“This year’s budget has provided an initial funding commitment of $1.5 million to complete these upgrades.

“Police identified that the Woorabinda, Palm Island and Aurukun watchhouses would be the first to be upgraded.”

Ms Spence said audits on all other Aboriginal Deed of Grant of Trust community watchhouses has been completed and police are currently calculating the costs for the installation of CCTV in those areas.

“Work will start in these other communities once costs have been determined and successful tenders are identified.”

“This work will help us provide extra protection for police who may have allegations brought against them by those detained in police custody and will also allow extra protection and supervision of offenders in all custodial areas of watchhouses.”

Ms Spence said the CCTV upgrades are in addition to the ongoing and demonstrated commitment by the Beattie Government to upgrading watchhouse facilities in Queensland.

“We have spent $144 million in the last 10 years upgrading watchhouses,” Ms Spence said.

“This funding demonstrates the Beattie Government is committed to the continual upgrade and further improvement of watch house facilities around the state.”
