The Honourable Peter Beattie

Premier Peter Beattie today announced that Neil Roberts, the Member for Nudgee, would be appointed as the Minister for Emergency Services.

Mr Roberts will be sworn in at 1.30pm tomorrow at Government House.

“Since his election in 1995 Neil has gained valuable experience as Parliamentary Secretary to Ministers in a wide array of portfolios including Treasury, State Development and Education, Employment and Training,” Mr Beattie said.

“Neil is an intelligent and hard-working MP who will bring broad experience to his new responsibilities.

“His life before politics - during which he has been a horse strapper, electrician, occupational health and safety trainer and industrial advocate - will stand him in good stead,” the Premier said.

“Queenslanders rely heavily on our emergency services, both in times of crisis and as part of day to day life.

“I am sure the officers who work for our emergency services and Queenslanders who rely on their assistance will welcome Neil’s appointment.”

Neil Roberts was born in Charleville in 1955. He is married and has two daughters. An electrical fitter and mechanic, he also has a Bachelor of Business and Graduate Certificate of Business Administration (QUT). Prior to his election he was an industrial advocate for the Electrical Trades Union.

Mr Beattie said the Member for Chatsworth, Chris Bombolas would also have new responsibilities, becoming the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Local Government, Planning and Sport.

“Chris was elected in September 2006 and came to parliament with a wealth of experience from his role as a reporter and television presenter,” Mr Beattie said.

“He will now have the opportunity to extend his experience as a Parliamentary Secretary, helping the Minister manage a dynamic portfolio which is responsible for areas of keen interest to all Queenslanders.”

Born in Newcastle in 1960, but educated in Queensland, Chris worked for 20 years as a journalist, newsreader and football commentator for the Nine Network.

He has a Bachelor of Business, Communication from QUT and is married with three children. He is a tireless community worker and has continued to support local charities since his election last year.
