Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford

Talented high school students wanting to pursue a health science careerare invited to an information evening to find out more the new Queensland Academy for Health Sciences.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said limited places were available for the Gold Coast academy’s first intake of students next year.

“The Queensland Academy for Health Sciences is an exciting new educational opportunity for students interested in a career in the health sciences,” Mr Welford said.

“It offers a new level of education never before seen on the Gold Coast, where young people will study with their high-achieving peers focusing on the health sciences, and be able to access university facilities and courses before they even finish school.

“I encourage students who wish to attend the academy, and their parents, to attend the information evening at Robina on Wednesday (11 July) to find out more about this opportunity.

“It will give them an understanding of the International Baccalaureate Diploma program studied at the academies, the partnership with Griffith University, the facilities and technology available and the admissions process for the academy.

“They’ll also be able to speak to representatives from Education Queensland, Griffith University and current students from the Brisbane-based academies.

The Queensland Academy for Science Mathematics and Technology at Toowong and the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries at Kelvin Grove opened earlier this year.

Mr Welford said the Queensland Academy for Health Sciences had been developed in partnership with Griffith University.

“Academy students will reap enormous benefits from this partnership, including course credit arrangements, involvement with university staff and access to resources and facilities,” he said.

“It’s no coincidence that the academy will be located in the same precinct as the new 500-bed teaching hospital. On any given day students could find themselves going from secondary to tertiary to research to clinical facilities.”

The information evening will take place at 7pm on 11 July at the Robina Community Centre, Robina Town Centre Drive, Robina. You can reserve a place by phoning the Academies on 3350 7880 or emailing qldacademies@deta.qld.gov.au.
