Minister for Communities, Disability Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships
The Honourable Warren Pitt
New cultural resources for Indigenous children
Young Indigenous Queenslanders will be encouraged to grow up safe, strong and proud as part of an awareness campaign delivered by the Queensland Government’s Office for Children.
Stirling Hinchliffe, Parliamentary Secretary to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Warren Pitt, said the new resource materials encouraged young Indigenous Queenslanders and their families to develop a strong sense of self and culture.
Postcards, book stickers and temporary tattoos promote messages such as “Growing up safe, growing up strong, growing up proud” and “I am my culture; strong, proud and deadly”.
The resources will be distributed to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander non-government organisations during this year’s NAIDOC Week, which starts today and continues until 15 July.
This year’s theme for NAIDOC Week, which marks the 50th anniversary of the cultural festival, is “50 Years: Looking Forward, Looking Blak”.
“The materials will help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children build a sense of pride in themselves and their culture during their most formative years,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
“It is hoped the messages promoted by these materials will develop self-awareness and continue to strengthen young Indigenous Queenslanders throughout their lives.”
Mr Hinchliffe said the messages had been developed in consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and service providers to recognise the importance of the next generation.
“The designs and colours reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identities and culture and their connection with their community,” he said.
The materials will also be available at regional shows, Brisbane’s Ekka and some early childhood services throughout Queensland.
