Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
NEW WINDOW ON QLD OPENS FOR SOUTH EAST ASIAN SCHOLARS: PREMIER
Students across South East Asia now have easy access to information about studying in the Smart State, thanks to the launch of Study Queensland on the Yahoo Asia search engine.
Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie welcomed the Study Queensland link, saying Yahoo Asia’s popular education portal was an important step in taking Queensland education and training to the world.
“Today’s generation of students are spending an increasing amount of time on the Internet to source information about their overseas study options,” Mr Beattie said.
“Our presence on Yahoo Asia’s education portal – which has more than 22 million visitors a month – will help give South East Asian students easy access to the information they need,” he said.
“Queensland has a lot to offer international students in terms of our close proximity, unique lifestyle, industry-relevant education and training options and our award winning teachers.
“The nine universities in Queensland also offer a diverse range of course options, an internationally regarded research environment, and one of the best vocational training systems in the world today.”
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said many South East Asian students have found Queensland to be the best destination for their senior schooling, vocational and university courses.
“In 2006, we attracted enrolments from more than 6,200 students from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines,” Mr Welford said.
The Study Queensland site on Yahoo Asia will be updated regularly to highlight areas where Queensland has particular expertise, such as in engineering, tropical biotechnology, eco-tourism, creative industries and health.
A range of South East Asian graduate success stories will also feature on the site.
“It’s one thing to say we’re good at what we do, but the real proof is in the successes enjoyed by graduates of Queensland courses,” Mr Welford said.
“There’s nothing more satisfying than to hear how Smart State graduates are excelling in their chosen fields, developing international networks and maintaining a life-long relationship with Queensland.”
