GAS POWER BOOST FOR QUEENSLAND

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has welcomed today’s announcement by ERM Power that it is proceeding with plans to double the capacity of its gas-powered Braemar Power Station on the Darling Downs by 2008-09 .

“The expansion of the Braemar Power Station from 450 megawatts to 900 megawatts will help reduce Queensland’s dependence on coal generated power and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr Beattie said.

Mr Beattie said Queensland had a long term strategy to secure a clean energy future for Queensland based on clean coal technologies, gas and renewables.

“Gas will help meet our medium-term needs. Our target for gas generation now is 13 per cent. By 2020 that will be 18 per cent,” Mr Beattie said.

“The decision by ERM Power to begin work soon on expanding the Braemar Power Station will help us meet these ambitious targets.

“I congratulate ERM Power for providing leadership to the State’s gas-generation industry.

“This initiative provides more power for Queensland domestic and industrial use and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

“The expansion will make Braemar the largest gas-fired power station in Australia.”
