Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
SKILLED GRADUATES ADD VALUE TO NOOSA SHIRE COMMUNITY
Eleven Noosa Shire jobseekers will graduate tomorrow from a Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative with improved employment skills and experience after being paid to work in local community organisations.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said this was the second and final intake for the Noosa Shire Work Skills project run by Noosa Shire Council.
“The State Government provided $293,550 funding towards paid work placements for 24 local jobseekers and Noosa Shire Council provided $129,838 in-kind funding,” Mr Mickel said.
“Participants were paid to work in organisations spread across the region in areas like administration and library duties, retail, child care, hospitality, construction, landscaping and horticulture.
“Participants also received training in general workplace skills, writing job applications and resumes, and job-specific training in their chosen field.
“So far five graduates have secured employment, two with Noosa Shire Council and three with local businesses, one of which is also taking on further training as a fitness instructor with the view to starting his own business.”
Noosa Mayor Bob Abbot said the project was coordinated by Noosa Community Training Centre and provided participants with job-specific training in their chosen field including work on projects like the development of the Noosa Trail Network in the Pomona and Cooran areas, work on water catchments and foreshores, and work in recycling.
“Participants were paid to work with organisations like the Environmental Services section of the Noosa Shire Council, Tewantin Child Care Centre, Noosa Respite Centre, Peregian Beach SLSC and the J and Noosa Community Training Centre,” Cr Abbot said.
“These organisations have extensive networks within the community and are using these connections to help participants gain employment.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
122,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
