Community-minded people sought for disability councils

Community-minded Queenslanders who would like to help shape the future of disability services are being encouraged to consider joining one of the state’s 10 regional disability councils.

Successful applicants will be appointed for a three-year term and will provide advice to the Queensland Government about disability issues.

Acting Disability Services Minister Kerry Shine said disability council members played an important role in representing the needs of people with a disability, their families and carers, as well as those working in the disability sector.

“Regional disability council members work within their local communities to ensure people have a voice when it comes to government decision-making and policy development on disability services,” he said.

“The advice that the councils provide is extremely valuable to the government, so I encourage anyone with an interest in the needs of people with a disability to consider applying for their local regional disability council.”

The chairs of each of the 10 regional disability councils make up the Disability Council of Queensland, which reports directly to the Minister on statewide issues affecting the disability sector.

Nominations for positions on the regional disability councils close on 17 July 2007.
