Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Premier Peter Beattie said today that the Minister for Emergency Services Pat Purcell had tendered his resignation from the ministry.
Mr Purcell will continue to represent his electorate of Bulimba. The reasons for Mr Purcell’s resignation are personal.
“I want to thank Pat for his faithful service to the Queensland Government since 1992,” Mr Beattie said.
“Just after the last election Pat and I agreed we would talk within the year about whether he wished to commit to three full years as a Minister.
“On Sunday I made a speech about the importance of renewal to all governments and today Pat has decided it is time to go.
“Pat has been a loyal and hardworking Minister who has passionately represented the officers and volunteers from the State’s fire and emergency services since he became the Minister for Emergency Services in 2005.
“He has been a strong voice for the emergency services in Cabinet and I thank him for his contribution.
“I saw first hand how his enthusiasm and commitment made a real difference to many of the emergency service responders working exhausting hours in the wake of Cyclone Larry.
“In fact his tireless work following the devastation wreaked by the cyclone will long be remembered by the community living in its path.
“The Emergency Services portfolio by its very nature demands a lot of weekend travel and unexpected and long hours and I want to thank Pat for his commitment.
“I know his wife and his children and many grand children will welcome the opportunity to have him back at home more regularly,” Mr Beattie said.
Pat Purcell won the seat of Bulimba in 1992 and sat on a wide range of parliamentary committees before becoming the Minister for Emergency Services in July 2005.
The Minister for Public Works, Housing, Information and Communication Technology will act as Emergency Services Minister until a new Minister is appointed next week.
