Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
$265 MILLION CENTRE OFFERS 1,200 LOCAL JOBS: PREMIER
Premier Peter Beattie today officially opened Woolworths’ new $265 million Brisbane Regional Distribution Centre – the largest in Australia.
“This purpose-built facility at Larapinta is the biggest in the Woolworths network and it will be a major source of local jobs, employing some 1,200 people,” Mr Beattie said.
“It features world-class technology, with a specially-designed IT tracking system following products from their arrival to the cash register, and then automatically re-ordering the stock when required,” he said.
“On 25 hectares, the centre has also been designed with energy and water efficiency in mind.
“It features reflective surfaces on roofing and windows, skylights and natural lighting, and energy-efficient fittings.
“It collects and recycles rainwater for toilets and irrigation, and it has the capability to use stormwater for washing down trucks.
“I congratulate Woolworths and Chairman James Strong on choosing to build this flagship smart centre in the Smart State.”
Woolworths’ first Queensland shop opened in Brisbane’s Queen Street under the name Woolworth Bargain Bazaar back in 1927.
Today, the Woolworths supermarket business alone in Queensland employs some 22,000 Queenslanders.
The new Brisbane Regional Distribution Centre will send refrigerated and other produce to 179 stores across Queensland and northern NSW.
Mr Beattie also today commended Woolworths and its staff for raising over $30 million in 20 years through its Fresh Future Appeal.
This appeal has supported many worthy causes, including buying toys for sick kids in hospitals around the State.
