PREMIER CALLS ON SMART STATE EXPORTERS TO STEP UP

Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie today announced 170 first-time exporters marched onto the world market between July 2006 and April 2007 – and there’s more are on the way.

“We exceeded our aim of getting 120 in the first year of our 2006-2011 export strategy, so we’re well on our way to blitzing the five-year target of 600 new exporters,” Mr Beattie said.

“In the same 10-month period, 77 businesses also recorded repeat export sales – another big achievement and I congratulate all of them,” he said.

As well as offering seminars, workshops and export advice, the Queensland Government supports firms through in-country support and recognition under the annual Premier of Queensland Export Awards.

“These Awards are all about celebrating export success and I urge businesses like these first-timers to step up and be recognised for their achievements.

“Winners lead by example and they encourage other Queensland companies to follow in their footsteps and join the export wave.”

Mr Beattie said exports were critical to Queensland’s economic development, continued prosperity and the Smart State’s international profile.

And he said the annual awards helped build momentum back home.

The awards are open to all Queensland exporters – large and small – across 11 categories, ranging from agribusiness, minerals, energy and tourism, through to art and entertainment, education and information technology.

“Entering the Export Awards is a great opportunity to network and to promote your business,” said the Premier.

“You will also earn yourself, your industry and your region some well deserved national and international recognition.”

The Export Awards are a key part of the Queensland Government’s strategy to support exporters and showcase the Smart State’s globally competitive industries.

Mr Beattie said this year’s Export Awards featured a new category – the Richard Joel Young Export Entrepreneur Award for creative young exporters. Other categories offered again this year include the Dermot McManus Award for outstanding achievement in innovative exporting and the Premier of Queensland’s Special Award to an outstanding individual.
