THURINGOWA JOBSEEKERS GRADUATE WITH NEW SKILLS

Forty-five Thuringowa jobseekers have a wealth of new experience and skills as they graduate tomorrow from local employment assistance programs.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Thuringowa Craig Wallace said the graduates comprise mature-age and long-term jobseekers, along with parents and carers who wish to return to the workforce.

“These programs, run by Jobtrain, received $70,000 from the Queensland Government Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant and another $80,000 from an Australian Government grant under the Queenslanders Working Together program, administered under Skilling Queenslanders for Work.

“The focus of this employment assistance is to equip people with skills and confidence, so their transition to work is a positive process,” said Mr Mickel.

Member for Thuringowa Craig Wallace said while unemployment is at a 30-year low of 3.5 per cent in Queensland, there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding work.

“Programs like this under our Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative are helping to give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce,” he said.

Jobtrain Manager Caroline Hook said participants have undertaken study in Certificate I -III Business, which incorporates administration, book-keeping, technology and customer service.

“We have had many successes from these programs, where participants have gone on to secure jobs.

“One success in particular is that of Andrea Campbell, who gained work as an administration officer for Edmunds First National Real Estate agency and has gone on to obtain her Property Management licence she has now become the office manager,” said Ms Hook.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
122,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
