Minister for Police and Corrective Services
The Honourable Judy Spence
UNION'S POLICE NUMBER CLAIMS OFF THE MARK
Minister for Police Judy Spence has rejected Queensland Police Union claims a large number officers are leaving the Queensland Police Service.
“The Queensland Police Service tells me around 340 officers leave the service each year which is around 3.6% of the total number of police and well below the figure the union claims,” Ms Spence said.
Ms Spence said police recruitment figures prove the service is more than covering for the loss of officers.
“In 2006-07 police recruited around 700 new police and in 2007-08 they anticipate another 690 recruits will be sworn in.
“These recruitment figures also cover for police who are leaving to work in other jurisdictions.
“The Queensland Police Service has provided 113 officers to the Australian Federal Police to provide security at international airports, the Queensland Police Service has already covered that by increasing recruitment numbers.”
Ms Spence said the Beattie Government has increased police numbers by more than 3,000 officers since 1998.
“By October 2008 there will be 9,930 police in Queensland compared to 6,830 when we were first elected.”
