Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

BUNDY JOBS PROJECT PARTICIPANTS READY TO MAKE THEIR MARK

Thirty-four jobseekers today celebrated the successful conclusion of two jobs projects giving them paid work experience and valuable skills to enhance their employment opportunities.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Employment Pathways and Reborn Construction projects were possible thanks to a $372,360 Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant.

“IMPACT Make Your Mark ran the projects that focused on ensuring that participants got real world skills that match the needs of today’s skill starved labour market,” Mr Mickel said.

“Although Queensland is currently experiencing historically low unemployment rates, the labour market participation rate is less than 70 per cent.

“By skilling and empowering our most disadvantaged jobseekers into work we have a real chance of increasing this number and easing the strain on businesses across the state.

“The first project, Employment Pathways, gave participants paid work in hospitality, retail, administration, community services or horticulture depending on their individual aspirations.

“The second, Reborn, gave those who took part entry level skills in construction and equipped them for work in a range of industries.

“Participants also did work at the Bundaberg & District Junior Tennis Association where they painted, paved, fenced and performed general construction tasks.”

IMPACT Make Your Mark Program Manager - Training Joan Graham-Jones said the employment outlook for participants was already looking brighter.

“Already four of the participants have found work and many more are in positive talks with local employers,” she said.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations Gary Fenlon represented Mr Mickel at the two graduations.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 122,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
