The Honourable Paul Lucas
After more than 50 years in service, Morayfield road will be widened to four lanes under a $90 million strategy to improve travel times for motorists.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Paul Lucas, today unveiled the preferred upgrade option for Burpengary-Caboolture Road, known locally as Morayfield Rd.
"Strong industry and population growth is placing additional demand on Morayfield Road.
“Currently 26,000 vehicles a day currently use Morayfield road but with traffic volume growing by about 5% a year, we’re planning now to meet the future needs of motorists.
“Widening Morayfield Road to four lanes will boost traffic capacity and improve travel times for motorist travelling to and from the Bruce Highway, “ Mr Lucas said.
Member for Kallangur, Ken Hayward said Main Roads had been talking to the community for the past 15 months about the road ahead and has already completed extensive traffic, environmental and engineering studies.
"Residents told us they wanted easier access to their properties, additional space for cyclists and pedestrians, and built-in protection for local fauna.
“Main Roads’ preferred upgrade option meets those needs,” he said.
Mr Lucas said wide community consultation had produced the best solution for the Morayfield road upgrade.
"The preferred design option gives engineers the flexibility to further extend Morayfield Road to six lanes as traffic demand grows."
“Plans also include a one-way service road between Gleeson and Paradise roads, U-turn facilities at the Graham, Paradise and Gleeson road intersections, as well as traffic lights at Gleeson Road and Paradise Roads,” he said.
It’s expected a four lane Morayfield Road will be delivered by 2015, at the latest, with construction dates to be finalised once advanced design work has been completed later this year.
Details of the preferred upgrade option are being sent to local residents and businesses this week, and can also be downloaded from the North Coast Hinterland section of the Main Roads website at www.mainroads.qld.gov.au
