POWER BOOST FOR LOGAN CITY

More than 20,000 homes and businesses in Logan City will benefit from an $11 million upgrade of the region’s electricity supply.

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said the work was part of a three-year $40 million-plus program to boost local power supplies.

Mr Beattie said an $11 million project to install new underground cables between Energex substations at Browns Plains and Crestmead was in the final stages of planning.

Work on site is expected to start in coming weeks, with completion around mid 2008.

“Logan is one of Energex’s fastest growing regions and boosting local supplies will help meet the future power demand,” Mr Beattie said.

“We’re investing now in a more reliable electricity network to make sure the power supply to the people of Logan keeps pace with growth in demand,” he said.

Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said Logan had seen peak power usage increase by more than 30% in the last four years.

Mr Wilson said this project would provide Energex technicians with more options to restore power more quickly in the event of unexpected damage to the network.

Areas to benefit from the upgrade include North Maclean, Greenbank, Park Ridge, Shailer Park, Chambers Flats, Crestmead, Munruben, Stockleigh, Browns Plains, Heritage Park, Marsden, Boronia Heights, Hillcrest, Regents Park, Parkinson, Forestdale, Heathwood, Doolandella, Pallara and Willawong.

“The project is part of a record $3 billion five-year capital expenditure program across South-East Queensland currently being undertaken by Energex,” Mr Wilson said.

Some of the major works include:
• $3.5 million towards a new $11 million substation at Loganlea;
• $3.4 million to upgrade the network out of Woodridge substation and;
• An upgrade of 82 transformers which supply local businesses, shops, farms and residences.
