Minister for Environment and Multiculturalism
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Logie winner red cards racism
Two-time Logie award winner William McInnes will feature in a celebrity match promoting social harmony and taking a stand against racism at Suncorp Stadium on 1 July.
Multiculturalism Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said she was grateful that Brisbane’s own William McInnes was coming home to support the Queensland Roars Against Racism campaign.
“It’s great to see high profile Queenslanders like Mr McInnes supporting our campaign,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“I look forward to seeing him, along with his team members, out on the field on July 1 for the celebrity match before the Queensland Roar and South Africa’s Supersport United compete for the Translink Cup.”
Writer and actor William McInnes said it was easy to be involved in this campaign because he supported the anti-racism messages.
"I am glad I can use any position or profile I might have for campaigns that ultimately aim to better the community as a whole,” Mr McInnes said.
"Racism is not something we should turn our backs on and if we all play our part in trying to preventing negative attitudes, it will make the world a better place.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said the former Blue Heelers and Seachange star would hit the football field with Steve Renouf and Tatiana Grigorieva in a celebrity curtain raiser match before the feature game between Queensland Roar FC and the South African Premier League side SuperSport United.
“This is the first major event of the Queensland Roars Against Racism campaign launched by Premier Peter Beattie in Johannesburg on 21 March.
“The campaign is a three year partnership between Multicultural Affairs Queensland and the Queensland Roar FC that aims to send positive messages in support of harmony and social cohesion.”
During the next three years a range of events and activities will be staged to challenge racist attitudes, stamp out racial intolerance and make it clear that there is no room for racism in Queensland.
“A family friendly program of entertainment will begin on the Suncorp Stadium concourse in Carnivale style with music, dance, stalls and giveaways at 1pm on 1 July,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Musicians and performers that feature at the Queensland Multicultural Festival will also entertain patrons during half time.”
