Minister for Public Works, Housing and Information and Communication Technology
The Honourable Robert Schwarten
DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING DWELLINGS IN CLINTON TO BE UPGRADED
The State Government’s record $719 million budget allocation for social housing has started to flow with Housing Minister Robert Schwarten today announcing funding for the upgrade of Department of Housing dwellings in Clinton, near Gladstone.
Mr Schwarten said more than $430,000 would go towards a project to refurbish 14 houses.
”This project is part of the Beattie Government's statewide program to improve the standard of social housing and the quality of life for lower-income families – wherever they live,” Mr Schwarten said.
“While the scope of work on each dwelling may vary, the overall project involves bathroom, kitchen, laundry, wardrobe and security and electrical upgrades.
“External works include carports, fencing, driveways, landscaping, storage sheds, outdoor living areas, screens and repainting.”
Mr Schwarten said the upgrades would vastly improve the quality of life for tenants.
“Through the upgrade programs we can make a real difference to people’s lives and the quality of housing in Clinton,” he said.
“It builds on the Beattie government’s strong commitment to public housing in and around Gladstone, which has seen more than $58 million spent on housing and housing related services since 1998.”
Mr Schwarten said the State Government’s construction and maintenance arm, QBuild, would manage the upgrades.
“This investment is not only delivering better public housing for Clinton, but it is boosting jobs and training opportunities for the construction industry,” he said.
“These upgrade activities will provide opportunities for QBuild apprentices to gain valuable on-the-job experience – securing trade skills for the future of our young people.”
Mr Schwarten said the work was expected to be completed August.
