The Honourable Peter Beattie

AUSTRALIANS OF YEAR TO TOUR QUEENSLAND: PREMIER

Australian of the Year Professor Tim Flannery, Young Australian of the Year Tania Major and Australia’s Local Hero Shanaka Fernando will be in Queensland next month for the national Tour of Honour 2007.

Premier Peter Beattie said he was delighted the National Australia Day Council had chosen the Smart State for the special event, with regional Queenslanders to meet the high achievers between July 10-12.

“These Australians have shown great drive, determination and compassion, and they’ve helped make Australia a better place,” Mr Beattie said.

“Queenslanders will get the chance to hear some of their inspirational stories first hand and learn how these ordinary people have gone on to make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others,” he said.

“On behalf of Queenslanders, I thank the Council for choosing Queensland and look forward to the insightful ideas, debate and discussion that are generated on the road.”

The upcoming tour will take in Emerald, Thuringowa, Mount Isa and Cooktown.

Young Australian of the Year and Queenslander Tania Major said she was looking forward to going on the road for this year’s Tour of Honour.

“I'm very proud to be able to show my fellow Australian of the Year award recipients around my home State, and pleased that regional communities will have the chance to meet and interact with Tim and Shanaka,” Tania said.

“We each have something different to share and I think we'll each take away our own learnings from speaking to local communities and seeing what's happening in these communities,” she said.

“To be able to visit these areas and talk with young people in regional and sometimes isolated communities is very important to me and to my fellow award recipients.

“No matter who we are or where we come from, we're all proud Australians, and the Tour of Honour will be a powerful reminder of this bond.”

The Tour of Honour 2007 travel to Emerald on Tuesday, 10 July, Thuringowa on Wednesday, July 11, Mount Isa on Thursday, July 12, and Cooktown on Friday, July 13.

This year’s theme is Challenging the Norm – Alternative views on success. Australian of the Year award recipients will address the theme in their discussions, and answer questions from the public.
