KOREA SPENDS UP BIG ON QUEENSLAND HORSES

Korean buyers have spent more than AUS$1.2 million at the Magic Millions national sales on the Gold Coast, Premier and Trade Minister Peter Beattie announced today.

Thirty-five buyers, including members of the Korea Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, bought 49 horses worth a total of AUS$1,219,850. Horses sold included 41 broodmares, three weanlings and five yearlings.

“This is a direct result of the Queensland Government working closely with Magic Millions to give the State’s prime horse racing stock a profile in the Republic of Korea,” Mr Beattie said.

During last month’s trade mission to Seoul, Mr Beattie presented the inaugural Magic Millions Cup to Korea Racing Association (KRA) chairman Woo-Jae Lee.

The first Queensland Cup – valued at US$55,000 – restricted entries to horses sold in the Magic Millions sales and was presented to Yong Pung at one of Korea’s biggest race meetings in Busan on May 5.

The Korean horse racing industry is worth an estimated AUS$7 billion, with Queensland in just four years becoming its largest supplier of bloodstock in the southern hemisphere.

“I congratulate Magic Millions for this valuable contribution to exports and for making the national sale the biggest and best breeding stock sale in the Southern Hemisphere," Mr Beattie said.

The record breaking 15-day Magic Millions sales on the Gold Coast grossed more than AUS$87.7 million between May 30 and June 14.

“Queensland has earned a reputation as a source of top quality bloodstock, with demand continuing to grow in Korea for our horses,” said the Premier.

“Our horses have become increasingly popular because of their reputation for stamina and adaptability.”
