QUEENSLAND SECURES POLICE HOUSING

The Queensland Government has secured an agreement which will see the Howard Government provide funding for police housing in indigenous communities in exchange for 10 Queensland police to assist the Commonwealth’s campaign in Northern Territory indigenous communities.

Premier Peter Beattie tabled the offer to Indigenous Affairs Minister, Mal Brough, today which would see both governments work in partnership to improve conditions in indigenous communities.

“We will provide the police and the Federal Government will fund $12 million to help Queensland build new police houses in five indigenous communities in the state,” Mr Beattie said.

“This will help fund the 29 extra police we announced earlier this month for Queensland’s indigenous communities.

“We felt that if the Commonwealth wanted us to help them in their campaign in the Northern Territory they should support our commitment to increase police in Queensland indigenous communities,” Mr Beattie said.

Ms Spence said Queensland will provide $3 million of the $15 million dollars required to build housing for extra police in Woorabinda, Hopevale, Lockhart River, Pormpuraaw and Aurukun.

“We can only put these police in place when we have accommodation for them and the Federal Government’s $12 million will fast track that process,” Ms Spence said.

“The funding Queensland has secured from the Commonwealth will help build a total of three houses, one triplex and four duplex buildings to house police in these communities.”
