Funding boost for Queensland community legal centres

Almost $700,000 has been allocated for additional staff in 10 community legal centres across Queensland, Attorney-General Kerry Shine said today.

Mr Shine said the additional funding would help some of the most disadvantaged members of the community, including children, victims of assault, the mentally ill and Indigenous men and women.

The funding is allocated to the following community legal centres:
·Bayside Community Legal Service ($51,764)
·Care Goondiwindi Incorporated ($57,146)
·Logan Legal Advice Centre ($57,146)
·Nundah Community Legal Centre ($57,146)
·Peninsula Community Legal Service ($51,765)
·Petrie Community Legal Service ($114,335)
·Roma Community Legal Service ($65,837)
·Suncoast Community Legal Service ($101,899)
·Taylor Street Community Legal Service ($65,281)
·Tenants Union of Queensland Inc ($42,241).

“The funding will provide a significant boost to community legal centres by funding additional staff,” Mr Shine said.

“Community legal centres can assist disadvantaged families going through difficult times and help them to access the legal advice and representation they need.”

The additional funding, announced as part of the 2007-08 State Budget this month, will be provided from the Legal Practitioner Interest on Trust Accounts Fund, administered by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.
