Minister for Environment and Multiculturalism
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

RETIRED BRONCO SAYS NO TO RACISM

Former Brisbane Bronco Steve Renouf will return to the field at Suncorp Stadium on 1 July when he plays in a celebrity match promoting messages challenging racist attitudes.
Multiculturalism Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said Steve Renouf had signed on to play in a feature game between Queensland Roar FC and the South African Premier League side SuperSport United, the first major event of the Queensland Roars Against Racism campaign.

“Steve Renouf has been an advocate of anti-racism messages throughout his career and his support of the campaign will help send positive messages into the community.

“His success in sport, wearing the Maroon Jersey several times in State of Origin campaigns, is an inspiration to us all.

“I am delighted to have such a passionate person, and someone who is reputed as one of Queensland’s most respected rugby league players, involved with us on the day.”

A family friendly program of entertainment will begin on the Suncorp Stadium concourse in Carnivale style with music, dance, stalls and giveaways at 1pm on 1 July.

Ms Nelson-Carr said this is the first major event of the Queensland Roars Against Racism campaign launched by Premier Peter Beattie in Johannesburg on 21 March.

“The campaign is a three year partnership between Multicultural Affairs Queensland and the Queensland Roar FC that aims to send positive messages in support of harmony and social cohesion.”

Mr Renouf said he believed that sport was a great catalyst for establishing harmony within the community.

“Sport is such a powerful tool for bringing people together from different cultural or religious backgrounds and also to promote anti-racism messages," Mr Renouf said.

“With football being the global code it is, this match will really show the value and benefit that diversity brings to Queensland as a community.

“As a father of five young children, I am really proud to be a role model for the anti-racism message.”

Over the next three years a range of events and activities will be staged as part of the campaign to challenge racist attitudes, stamp out racial intolerance and make it clear that there is no room for racism in Queensland.
