Minister for Natural Resources and Water and Minister Assisting the Premier in North Queensland
The Honourable Craig Wallace

FREE WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS PROSERPINE SOIL STUDY

Proserpine landholders and other interested community groups are invited to attend free half-day workshop next week to learn more about the impact of acid sulfate in soils in the region.

Natural Resources and Water Minister Craig Wallace said the workshop and accompanying field trip, scheduled for Wednesday June 27, was part of a acid sulfate soil mapping project being conducted in the region.

Mr Wallace said as well as learning general information on acid sulfate soils, participants would be updated on the Natural Heritage Trust project, Acid Sulfate Soil Risk Mapping for Central Queensland.

“The workshop aims to help industry and agriculture better cope with acid sulfate soils in the area by providing a general understanding of the nature, distribution and impact of these potentially harmful soils,” Mr Wallace said.

“Participants will also visit some of the project mapping sites, inspect core samples, conduct pH tests on soil samples and hold discussions on the results of the groundwater-monitoring program.

“Acid sulfate soils are becoming topical with rising population pressures on our coastal resources through urban, agricultural and recreational development and this workshop is a step toward addressing the problem in Central Queensland.”

Mackay-based NRW scientist Peter Muller said acid sulfate soils generated sulphuric acid and released heavy metals when they were exposed to air due to drainage and other excavations.

“This is potentially damaging for the environment, engineering structures and even human health,” Mr Muller said.

A bus for the half-day workshop leaves the Proserpine Ex-Services Club, on Chapman Street, at 9am and returns to the club at 12.30pm.

Participants are advised to bring a hat, sunscreen, covered footwear and appropriate clothing. Morning tea will be provided during the tour followed by a light lunch at the club.
