Minister for Environment and Multiculturalism
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Multiculturalism Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has launched the inaugural Refugee Week on World Refugee Day saying the day celebrated the courage and contributions of refugees throughout the world.
Ms Nelson-Carr said Queensland had welcomed close to 6000 offshore humanitarian and refugee entrants over the past five years each one helping to build on Queensland’s strong multicultural community.
“World Refugee Day is an opportunity to acknowledge refugees in our community and raise awareness of the issues they face over the course of their journeys.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said a week of celebrations, supported by a Multicultural Affairs Queensland (MAQ) $30,000 grant, will begin today with activities planned to run through to Sunday 24 June.
“The World Refugee Day Community Festival will be held on Sunday at the Annerley Football Grounds and promises to be a great day with entertainment, food stalls, a fashion parade and a sports tournament.”
The $30,000 MAQ grant was provided under the Multicultural Assistance Program (MAP) which supports community organisations to promote social cohesion, community harmony and cultural inclusiveness in Queensland.
