The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Mon Repos volunteers recognised for “excellence”
Mon Repos turtle conservation volunteers have been recognised at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Excellence Awards for their outstanding contribution to marine turtle conservation.
Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the 40-strong group of local volunteers had been highly commended in the volunteering category of the EPA Excellence Awards at a ceremony in Brisbane last night (June 19).
“These volunteers have shown a great concern for threatened marine turtles and the environment, and a dedication to educate the public on these issues,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Each of these volunteers plays a vital role in the nightly operations of the Mon Repos Turtle Information Centre during the busy five to six month marine turtle nesting season.
“The volunteers at Mon Repos help to staff the front entry and souvenir shop, organise and escort groups of up to 60 people on the beach, give talks around the nesting and hatching turtles, and assist with turtle research.
“Volunteers play a significant part in the visitor experience, with many people expressing gratitude towards our volunteers simply because they are everyday people who care and are doing their best to help the environment.
“Their success can be measured by the comments we receive from visitors who have benefited from the knowledge, friendliness and helpfulness of the volunteer staff.
“Again on behalf of the EPA I would like to congratulate the volunteers on their outstanding achievements.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said the EPA Excellence Awards recognised employees and volunteers for their dedication, commitment and hard work in protecting the environment for a sustainable future.
