“Excellence” award for EPA’s Fraser Island cleanup team

The annual weekend blitz to clean-up Fraser Island in January this year has received further recognition with another major award.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service’s Fraser Island team which helped to coordinate the annual clean-up has received an Environmental Protection Agency award for Excellence.

Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the award was presented to the QPWS Fraser Island team for achieving ‘outstanding environmental and conservation outcomes through excellence in building relationships with external partners’.

“The QPWS Great Sandy Fraser Island team put in an amazing amount of effort in conjunction with their partners, the Queensland 4WD Association and sponsors Toyota Motor Corporation Australia Ltd and Oz Hire,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Through their efforts, 59 cubic metres of rubbish was collected, and 35 bags were also filled with weeds removed from strategic sites across the island.

“QPWS rangers also used the clean-up weekend to reinforce Fraser-friendly camping and safety practices.

“The environment is the real winner from the partnership with less litter and fewer weeds spoiling the Fraser Island World Heritage area.

“The increased environmental awareness and participation of many 4WD groups in caring for and appreciating the protected area is fantastic,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

The number of people involved in the clean up weekend has more than doubled over the past three years with 935 participants from 21 4WD clubs involved this year.

The EPA Excellence Awards have seven categories and recognise employees and volunteers for their dedication, commitment and hard work in contributing to the Queensland Government’s objectives and protecting the environment for a sustainable future.

The partnership has also won official recognition from the Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beach Challenge 2006 with Fraser Island’s Seventy Five Mile Beach winning the Litter Prevention Award for the Central Queensland-Wide Bay region.
