Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

GOLD COAST HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY ONE STEP CLOSER

Premier Peter Beattie was at Southport on the Gold Coast today as foundations were laid for the new $43.5 million Queensland Academy for Health Sciences, which will train future doctors and health professionals for the Smart State.

Mr Beattie said the academy would cater for Queensland’s best and brightest high school students seeking a career in health and allied health services.

“The new academy will open its doors in 2008 for students interested in becoming doctors, dentists, physiotherapists and other health professionals,” Mr Beattie said.

“Like the two Brisbane-based academies for Science, Mathematics and Technology (Toowong) and Creative Industries (Kelvin Grove) that opened to students this year, the Health Sciences Academy will give students the opportunity to combine their senior schooling with tertiary studies, fast-track their qualifications and gain invaluable work experience.”

Mr Beattie said the Government was partnering with Griffith University’s Health Group to provide exciting, world-class opportunities for students.

“Students will reap enormous benefits from this partnership, including course credit arrangements, involvement with university staff and access to resources and facilities,” he said.

“The academy is also located in the same precinct as the new 500-bed teaching hospital and the Griffith University Institute of Glycomics.

“On any given day, a students could learn in a secondary and tertiary environment, as well as research and clinical facilities.

“The campus will eventually include seven science laboratories, a 500-seat lecture theatre, a gym and a multi-media suite.

“It will also be totally wireless enabled, allowing students to use specialised notebook computers to study anywhere on the grounds.”

Mr Beattie said up to 150 Year 10 and 11 students were expected to enrol next year.

“Studying at this academy is a fantastic opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in health and allied health services,” he said.

“An information evening on 11 July at 7pm at the Robina Community Centre will give students and parents a chance to learn more about the academy.”

Students and parents interested in attending can reserve a place at the information evening by phoning the academies on 3350 7880 or emailing qldacademies@deta.qld.gov.au
