Minister for Health
The Honourable Stephen Robertson

COMMUNITY TO HAVE STRONG SAY ON NEW SUNSHINE COAST HOSPITAL

Three Sunshine Coast health consumers are being sought to help plan the new $940 million tertiary hospital at Kawana, Health Minister Stephen Robertson said today.

Mr Robertson said people with strong community links and networks will be appointed to a newly-established Stakeholder Advisory Group to help steer the hospital’s development.

“The Beattie Government is building a new 650 bed hospital at Kawana to meet the future health needs of a growing Sunshine Coast population.

“Its important the local community that will use this hospital has a say in what sort of hospital it wants and what services the hospital will deliver.

“That’s why we’re looking for local health consumers to join other stakeholders on the project’s stakeholder advisory group.

”We’re particularly interested in people who understand the health care concerns of the local community and have the time and commitment to help Queensland Health provide quality services to the region.

“Likely applicants should be prepared to attend meetings every second month and participate in special interest working groups if needed.”

Mr Robertson said the Stakeholder Advisory Group will ensure full consumer, carer and community participation in the hospital’s service planning and delivery.

In particular, the group’s role includes:

• Advising Queensland Health about appropriate structures and processes to ensure effective consumer, carer and community participation at all levels of service planning and delivery.

• Providing strategic direction in the establishment of the Sunshine Coast Hospital, to be built at Kawana.

• Undertaking further analysis and consultation in relation to:

o The core values and principles that define the philosophy of care at the Sunshine Coast Hospital.

o The service delivery models that will ensure the people of the Sunshine Coast region have access to high quality care.

o The development of teaching and research infrastructure consistent with that required for a tertiary hospital.

Other representatives on the advisory group include: Professor Paul Thomas, Vice Chancellor of the University of the Sunshine Coast; Dr Wayne Herdy of the AMAQ Sunshine Coast branch; representatives from Caloundra and Maroochy Shire councils, Queensland Ambulance Service and public and private health providers.

Queensland Health has already acquired land for the hospital on a 20 hectare site at the southern side of the Kawana Way/Lake Kawana Boulevard intersection.

People interested in serving on the advisory group have until 9 July 2007 to submit a written application detailing any experience they have with consumer groups and their motivation for wanting to join the Stakeholder Advisory Group

Further information about the Stakeholder Advisory Group and a copy of the application form is available by telephoning the Sunshine Coast District Service Development Team on 5470 6624.
