Families of people with a disability in the Mackay–Whitsunday region will have access to a new full-time physiotherapist position thanks to extra funding from the Queensland Government.

Disability Services Minister Warren Pitt and Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin announced the new position today as part of the Community Cabinet meeting in the region.

Mr Pitt said the extra funding would help address the growing demand for disability physiotherapist services in the region.

He said the physiotherapy position would be advertised soon and would complement existing regional disability services that include occupational therapy, speech language pathology, social work and psychology services.

“The Mackay–Whitsunday region is one of Queensland’s fastest-growing areas, resulting in a growing demand on community services and infrastructure,” he said.

“It has become clear in recent months that there is a need for enhanced physiotherapy services in the Mackay area, particularly for children.

“After consultation with the Member for Mackay, Tim Mulherin, to gauge the local need and consider how best to respond, we are pleased to announce this extra funding to boost local physiotherapist services.

“Tim’s representations and the allocation of this additional funding are proof of the Queensland Government’s commitment to provide equitable access to appropriate disability services to all Queenslanders, regardless of where they live.”

Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin said the new physiotherapist position would be based at Disability Services Queensland’s Regional Service Centre in Wood Street, Mackay.

“This position will provide a much-needed service boost for children and adults with a disability to enjoy a better quality of life,” he said.

“The physiotherapist will complement a range of other disability services already provided by the Mackay Base Hospital, Community Health and Education Queensland.”
