Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
GRANT WILL DELIVER ONE-ON-ONE HELP FOR LOCAL TOURISM OPERATORS
Townsville: Minister for State Development John Mickel today announced $60,000 in State Government funding to help local tourism operators bounce back after Cyclone Larry.
The funding will enable Townsville Enterprise Limited to engage marketing specialists to work with local operators on building their businesses.
“In the wake of Cyclone Larry there seems to be a perception amongst people outside of the region that this area is closed for business or potentially dangerous to visit,” Mr Mickel said.
“It’s a perception that’s having a devastating effect on visitor numbers and on the region’s economy.
“We need to get the message out that this region is back on track and still one of the worlds most beautiful and diverse tourist destinations.”
Mr Mickel said changing perceptions and reinvigorating the profile of the region was very difficult for small tourism operators because they often lacked the necessary marketing experience.
“I applaud Townsville Enterprise Limited’s (TEL) plan to bring marketing specialist Andy Bennett to the region, to deliver a series of targeted workshops and then to work one-on-one with operators to help them get results,” he said.
Mr Bennett has extensive experience in tourism product development and marketing in both Australia and the United Kingdom.
Townsville Enterprise Limited (TEL) is an organisation with a strong commitment to strengthening the region’s economy.
TEL Chief Executive Officer Glenys Schuntner welcomed the funding announcement.
“Townsville Enterprise has been working with operators to spread the message that the North Queensland region is open for business. This grant will provide a platform to work with the local tourism industry to put North Queensland back on the map,” she said.
“North Queensland is home to world heritage listed wet tropics rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef and genuine Australian outback. It’s the quintessential Australian holiday destination.”
The funding was provided under Stage Two of the State Government’s $3 million Cyclone Larry Special funding program rolling out across North Queensland in the coming year.
