TIME RUNNING OUT FOR SMART WOMEN - SMART STATE AWARD ENTRIES

Time is running out for Queensland women to shine the spotlight on their exciting careers in science, engineering or information and communication technology (ICT), says Minister for Women Margaret Keech.

Mrs Keech said nominations for the 2007 Smart Women – Smart State Awards closed on June 29.

“The Awards put the focus on women and girls in the traditionally male-dominated fields of science, engineering and ICT,” Mrs Keech said.

“Queensland women make up just 36% of natural and physical scientists, 17.2% of IT professionals and 7.2% of engineers.

“These numbers are very low and, with Queensland’s ongoing skills shortages, more women are needed in these fields.

“The Awards shine the light on amazing women in non-traditional careers, giving them the recognition they deserve and encouraging other women and girls to give them a go.”

This year there are 13 categories, including seven for students, and a $32,500 prize pool.

Past winners say they have benefited greatly from their awards.

“Winning the Award was the highlight of my secondary schooling and clearly helped my application for a place in the competitive sphere of medicine at university,” said 2006 Secondary School Students award winner, Zoe Brown.

2006 Research Scientist Award winner Professor Melissa Little agrees.

“Being a professional woman and a mother is a tough juggle but, when you get recognition for your efforts, it all seems worth it,” Melissa said.
