JOINT STATEMENT
Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Minister for Tourism, Fair Trading, Wine Industry Development and Women
The Honourable Margaret Keech
QUEENSLAND ISLANDS JOIN UP FOR MAJOR CAMPAIGN
The islands of the Great Barrier Reef will now be promoted under one banner in a groundbreaking initiative announced by Premier Peter Beattie today.
Mr Beattie officially launched the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef international marketing campaign at today’s Community Cabinet in Bowen.
“The cutting edge campaign is designed to attract Queensland’s key international tourist markets,” Mr Beattie said.
“This is a fine example of what can be achieved through the strong partnerships between government and industry.
“By working together and taking a single approach to marketing the islands, this campaign creates a real opportunity to achieve real growth in Queensland’s top visitor markets.
“It offers a fresh approach for our traditionally strong international markets such as the United Kingdom, Europe, USA and New Zealand.
“In emerging markets such as India, China and Korea, this campaign will ensure Queensland is top-of-mind for travellers deciding to visit Australia.
“The campaign will encourage visitors to come to Queensland for their island experiences rather than stopping at alternative island destinations in other countries.
“My Government is investing more than $750,000 over the next three years to enhance the way international tourists see and experience the Reef.
“This campaign is the first time all the islands of the Barrier reef will be marketed under one banner, and I’m confident that Queensland’s tourism industry will reap great rewards of such forward thinking.”
Tourism Minister Margaret Keech said the campaign would involve extensive co-operative marketing and online activities, focusing on the diverse experiences offered by a reef island holiday.
“Queensland’s reputation as home to some of the world’s most beautiful tropical islands located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef is well known,” Mrs Keech said.
“What many people do not realise that each island of the Reef offers a very different and unique experience.
“This campaign will change that view and strengthen consumer awareness of our islands.
“The Islands of the Great Barrier Reef campaign involves more than 20 resorts and a wide range of camping, sailing, diving and other experiences.
“There is no better way to see and enjoy one of the world’s natural wonders than to stay on an island right in it’s heart.
“This campaign will reinvigorate the marketing of the Great Barrier Reef islands and create a key point of difference over other international destinations.
“Queensland’s international tourism trade partners now have a new product range to consider and can offer their clients new ways to experience the Great Barrier Reef.”
Mrs Keech said the campaign would complement the 74 Islands out of the Blue domestic campaign currently in the market.
