Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
More than a thousand people in the Whitsundays have been helped into jobs under State government jobs programs, Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said today.
Mr Mickel said projects and incentives under Skilling Queenslanders for Work, and its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative, have helped more than 1000 people into jobs.
“Another 240 people have received assistance to help them join the labour force.
“But even though we have the lowest employment rate in Queensland in 30 years there are still people who need specialised assistance,” Mr Mickel said.
“Jobs projects can help the most disadvantaged get into work, or get those few extra skills to improve their future job prospects.”
Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt said since 1998 in the Whitsunday electorate 1,082 jobs have been created with a total investment of $7.74 million from the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative.*
Ms Jarratt said under the Community Employment Program a total of 425 people have been assisted, resulting in 235 job placements.
“Almost 300 apprentices and trainees, including 12 school-based trainees have been employed in public sector agencies at a total cost of $5.06M,” she said.
“Private sector employers and group training organisations have also benefited with financial incentives totalling $930,000 for employing 363 apprentices and 128 trainees.
“To support the Government's Education and Training Reforms for the Future agenda, the Get Set for Work Program has assisted 52 disadvantaged youth aged 15-17 years,” Ms Jarratt said.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 121 000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
The initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
