SCHOOL NETBALL STARS COMPETE FOR STATE HONOURS

Around 120 school netball stars from across the state will compete in the Queensland School Sport 12-years-and-under girls Netball Championships at Lawnton, in Brisbane’s north, next week.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the state championships would be held from Sunday 17 June to Wednesday 20 June at the Pine Rivers Netball Association.

“The students have been selected for their hard work, talent and skill and I wish them every success at the four-day event ,” Mr Welford said.

“The championships provide a great opportunity for these young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state.”

All 12 of the school sporting regions will be represented - Metropolitan North, Metropolitan West, Metropolitan East, North West, South West, Wide Bay, Capricornia, Darling Downs, Northern, Peninsula, South Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Mr Welford said the Metropolitan North team would be defending the state championship title this year.

“The championships will be played out in a round-robin format and the team with the highest number of wins after four days of competition will be awarded state honours,” he said.

“I’d also like to thank the dedicated teachers and school staff who have worked hard training teams for this event.”

Following the championships, a team will be selected to compete at the School Sport Australia Netball Exchange, which will be held in Wollongong from 2-7 September.
