Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
ASIA PACIFIC CITIES SUMMIT WELCOMED TO SMART STATE: PREMIER
The Queensland Government has thrown its weight behind Brisbane City Council’s Asia Pacific Cities Summit which returns to the Smart State this year, Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie announced today.
Mr Beattie said the State was providing $300,000 in sponsorship for the event which would attract up to 900 civic leaders across a variety of disciplines and business backgrounds.
The Summit, a BCC initiative, was last held in China in 2005 with delegates from 127 cities and 41 countries attending. It will this year be held in Brisbane from August 31 to September 3, coinciding with Riverfestival.
“Not only is Queensland the engine room of Australia but we are taking a leadership role in confronting the climate change challenge head on so this event is a perfect opportunity to network across our region,” Mr Beattie said.
“The Summit will enable information to be shared and partnerships strengthened to ensure we tap into creative ideas and innovative solutions that will help decision makers and planners develop sustainable living models that also safeguard our quality of life,” he said.
“On behalf of Queenslanders, I am delighted to be supporting this event and look forward to the partnerships and trade opportunities that result.”
Mr Beattie said an added benefit this year was a business matching program where visiting companies were being matched with key Queensland industry sectors, including the food and beverage industry, professional services sector, building and construction, leisure marine and the rapidly emerging creative technology sector.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman welcomed the Queensland Government as the Principal Partner for the 2007 international event.
“This sponsorship will help consolidate the Asia Pacific Cities Summit as the region’s premier business and civic biennial event,” Cr Newman said.
He said hundreds of national and international delegates were expected to inject millions of dollars into the local economy during the four-day event.
To deliver this, Brisbane City Council and Austrade are working together to match inbound business delegations with potential customers, suppliers and partners from South East Queensland.
