HOUSING BOOST FOR BUNDABERG RESIDENTS ESCAPING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Wide Bay-Burnett families escaping domestic violence will benefit from the opening of a new $1.98 million shelter in Bundaberg today by State Housing Minister Robert Schwarten.

Mr Schwarten said the shelter would provide short term accommodation and support for up to five families of women and children escaping domestic violence.

“Initiated by the Bundaberg and District Women’s Domestic Violence Service Inc., the project was supported and funded under the Department of Housing’s Community Housing Crisis Accommodation Program,” Mr Schwarten said.

“Bundaberg and District Women’s Domestic Violence Service Inc. has been providing assistance to victims of domestic violence since 1978 and also manages two other properties under CAP.”

Mr Schwarten said the complex comprised of two buildings, with two, three-bedroom and three, two bedroom units, a small office for night intake and a double car garage for secure parking for workers undertaking initial assessment at night.

“The Bundaberg and District Women’s Domestic Violence Service will administer and operate the centre with on-going funding received from the Department of Communities through the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program,” he said.

“The recent State Budget included $15.5 million to build and purchase additional dwellings, shelters and hostels under the Crisis Accommodation Program to help those who are forced to leave their homes because of domestic violence or other emergency situations.

“This new shelter also demonstrates the State Government’s commitment to social housing in Bundaberg."
