The Honourable Rod Welford
ANTICIPATED INDEPENDENT FILM OPENS FESTIVAL
The anticipated action-thriller, Fay Grim, by cult American independent filmmaker Hal Hartley, will open this year’s Brisbane International Film Festival on Thursday 2 August.
Arts Minister Rod Welford said the film, featuring Parker Posey and Jeff Goldblum, would set the scene for a festival focused on independent film and filmmaking.
“While the full program for BIFF won’t be released for several more weeks, I can tell you that this year’s festival will incorporate a wealth of quality independent films,” Mr Welford said.
“It is appropriate that BIFF 2007 opens with a film by Hal Hartley, as he’s widely considered to be the pioneer of the independent film movement.”
Hartley is renowned for his ability to deliver cult films on a shoestring budget.
His films are noted for a deadpan acting style and philosophical and humorous dialogue.
Fay Grim is the follow-up, but not sequel, to Henry Fool, released in 1998.
Fay Grim features Parker Posey as a single mother afraid her 14-year-old son Ned will grow up to be like his father Henry, who has been missing for seven years after an escape from the law.
Mr Welford said the Brisbane International Film Festival would run from August 2-12, with events and screenings at locations across south-east Queensland.
“Opening night is always the cinematic and social highlight of the Festival and I’m confident Fay Grim will have great appeal for BIFF’s audience,” he said.
Opening night tickets will be on sale from tomorrow, for $65 per ticket, which includes the feature screening and after-party. Bookings can be made by phoning 3007 3007.
The full BIFF program will be released in July.
