Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Cairns City Council has received a $49,180 grant from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to employ four local jobseekers to take part in the Community Facilities Use and Safety Audit project.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Cairns Desley Boyle said the participants will receive 14 weeks paid work on the project.
“They will talk to members of the community in the southern suburbs of Cairns to determine their satisfaction with community facilities in the area,” Mr Mickel said.
Member for Cairns Desley Boyle said the project provides a valuable service as Cairns City Council is moving forward to develop a cohesive community facility plan.
“Participants will receive training and assistance in data collection and analysis while building up their general job readiness as they work for an important local employer,”Ms Boyle said.
Cairns City Council Manager of Community and Cultural Development Leslie Sparkes said when the project is completed the participants will have gathered a variety of useful information
“They’ll have asked local people and community groups what their needs are to establish current use and future needs of these facilities,” Ms Sparkes said.
“They are also looking at whether any improvements or repairs need to be made which can cover things like lighting, signage and accessibility.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 121,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
