SCHOOL HOCKEY STARS VIE FOR STATE HONOURS

Up to 280 young hockey stars from across the state will converge on Colmslie, in east Brisbane, this week to compete in the Queensland School Sport 12 years and under Hockey Championships.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the State Hockey Centre would host the four-day championships, from Wednesday 13 June to Saturday 16 June.

“The championships will take the form of a round-robin style competition with the 10 girl’s teams playing each other and the 10 boy’s teams playing each other,” Mr Welford said.

“At the end of the four days the boy’s team and girl’s team with the most points will be declared state champions.

"I'd like to congratulate each competitor on his or her achievement in representing their regions, and wish them every success at the championships.

"This event, now in its 25th year, provides a great opportunity for these young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state.

“I have no doubt some of these students will follow in the footsteps of former competitors Jamie Dwyer and Nikki Hudson who have gone on to play for Australia and win Olympic gold medals.”

Ten sporting regions will be represented—Metropolitan West, Metropolitan North, Metropolitan East, Northern, Wide Bay, Capricornia, Darling Downs, Peninsula, South Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Mr Welford thanked the dedicated teachers and school staff who had worked hard to make the championships a success.

A boy’s team and a girl’s team consisting of 14 players each will be selected to compete at the School Sport Australia Hockey Exchange to be held in Adelaide in August.
