WE WILL DELIVER SEQ’S WATER: BEATTIE

Bundamba: Premier Peter Beattie and Deputy Premier Anna Bligh were today on hand to witness a crack team of water quality experts commissioning vital inflow pipes for Bundamba’s Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The plant is a key element in the $2.4 billion Western Corridor Purified Recycled Water Project.

“The plant is working 24 hours a day, six days as week, and will hit its first key target of making purified recycled water available to the nearby Swanbank Power Station,” said Mr Beattie.

“This will be on line by August 31 and will ensure up to 20ML a day of Wivenhoe Dam drinking water is freed up for residential and business use,” he said.

“That is equal to daily drinking water, on current usage, for more than 140,000 people.

“We will do this – we will deliver on the water grid and give SEQ residents water security and for generations to come.”

The Premier and Deputy Premier also inspected the latest batch of reverse osmosis units to arrive and be tested at Bundamba.

The other major drought projects are also on schedule.

The desalination plant at the Gold Coast is set to deliver its first water in November 2008 and will provide a total of 125ML a day of extra water a day from January 2009.

The completed Western Corridor Project will deliver up to 232ML a day of purified recycled water for power stations, industry and agricultural uses and to supplement the region’s drinking water supplies by the end of 2008.

“In fact in last week’s State Budget we allocated $630 million to bring forward the supply of purified water to Wivenhoe Dam two months earlier – October 2008,” Ms Bligh said.

“When these two major projects come on line and are at at full capacity they will deliver more than 65% of the region’s daily water needs, based on current usage.”
