HINZE DAM EIS RELEASED

8 June 2007

The Coordinator -General has approved the release of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the development of Stage 3 of the Hinze Dam, on the Nerang River near the Gold Coast.

The Deputy Premier and the Minister for Infrastructure Anna Bligh today said
the Coordinator –General’s decision to release the EIS for public comment demonstrated the active role the Government was taking in the Gold Coast City Council’s proposal to raise the embankment of the Hinze Dam.

“The GCCC, through the Hinze Dam Alliance, has proposed raising the Hinze Dam wall from 93.5 metres to 108.5 metres,” she said.

“The upgrade would provide a water storage capacity at Full Supply Level in excess of 300,000 million litres and increase the dam’s yield by at least an additional 16 million litres a day.

”The Hinze dam will connect to the South East Queensland water grid via the Southern Regional Water Pipeline, linking major existing planned water storage and supply infrastructure to allow water to be channelled across the region.”

Ms Bligh said the state government’s involvement was due to the project being declared a significant project under the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971 last October.

She said under the Act the Coordinator-General must publicly notify IF an EIS is required.

“This next stage in the process follows the draft Terms of Reference which were released for public comment and attracted 13 responses. The EIS will be opened for public comment until July 9,” she said.

Ms Bligh said the Federal Government had accredited the EIS process to be conducted under the SDPWO Act under the Bilateral Agreement between the Federal and Queensland Governments. (It was declared a controlled action in December 2006).

She said the EIS will require assessment by the State and Federal Governments prior to the construction of the project proceeding.
