Lucas Welcomes Maritime Negotiations

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Paul Lucas today welcomed continued negotiations between CSL shipping and maritime unions regarding operation of vessels previously controlled by Cement Australia.

Mr Lucas said CSL had indicated the vessels would maintain Australian registration and an Australian crew.

“Australian maritime crews are the best in the world,” Mr Lucas said.

“The best way of protecting our pristine coastal environment while servicing this trade is to have properly trained and professional Australian seafarers manning Australian ships,” Mr Lucas said.

“I welcome early indications that negotiations are scheduled to continue between CSL and the maritime unions.

“It's encouraging the parties are meeting and I look forward to a positive conclusion that sees the continuation of Australian crews and flag continuing to be part of this vital trade which is so important to the Queensland economy.

“This is a clear example that collective bargaining can work for both companies and workers.”

Mr Lucas said it was a common-sense approach from the company and the Maritime Union of Australia, which not only provided advantages for both parties but also meant better protection for the maritime environment.
