The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

Townsville’s Biggest Loser 2006 contestant Big Wal has signed up to roar against racism on 1 July at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane where he will play in a celebrity match to promote messages that challenge racist attitudes.

Multiculturalism Minister and Member for Mundingburra Lindy Nelson-Carr said Big Wal would have a good workout on 1 July when he takes part in a celebrity curtain raiser match before the Queensland Roars Against Racism feature game between Queensland Roar and the South African Premier League side Supersport United.

Ms Nelson-Carr said she was ecstatic that one of north Queensland’s favourite firemen and biggest loser star Vladimir "Wal" Milberg supported the campaign and said his commitment to the community was outstanding.

“Big Wal won $50,000 as the contestant that lost the greatest amount of weight and after leaving the competition gave away 50 per cent to a charity treating burns victims,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“The game is the first major event of the Queensland Roars Against Racism campaign that Premier Peter Beattie launched during his official reception in Johannesburg on 21 March.

“The campaign is a three year partnership between Multicultural Affairs Queensland and the Queensland Roar FC that aims to send positive messages in support of harmony and social cohesion.”

Mr Milberg said he supported the campaign because it was something that will positively impact on the community as a whole.

“These types of issues have a real impact on our lives and being involved at Suncorp Stadium on 1 July gives me the opportunity to support and hopefully influence attitudes towards racism,” Mr Milburg said.
