Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Premier Peter Beattie has today announced 47 outstanding celebrations across the State are take a share of more than $1 million in funding under the Queensland Events Regional Development Program (QERDP).
Mr Beattie said this successful Government program assists events in every corner of the State and the vital role they play in growing local tourism and creating jobs.
“Supporting, growing and enhancing Queensland’s portfolio of events is a key Government strategy that in turn supports the development of our rural and regional centres,” Mr Beattie said.
“For many regions, local events like these are the life-blood of their communities. They draw crowds, attract investment and result in short and long-term employment opportunities for Queenslanders,” he said.
“It’s pleasing this funding round to see some well-known events continuing to grow as well as some newcomers to the program, like Rockhampton’s Rocky New Year Festival and Monto’s CHQ Australian Light Horse Re-enactment & Reunion 2007.
“The Sunshine Coast’s Coolum Kite Festival is a stand out and has been elevated to the funding program’s top level, awarding it $150,000 over the next three years ($50,000 per annum).”
Other events on the long list to receive funding this round include The Great Australian Corroboree in Cardwell, Gympie’s Heart of Gold Film Festival; and the Richmond Great Outback Challenge.
The Queensland Government has invested more than $8.9 million in some 420 events since the program began in 2001.
Mr Beattie invited event organisers planning activities with the potential to showcase their region to contact the program.
Queenslanders wanting information about QERDP and the application process can call the secretariat in Townsville on (07) 4799 7301 or visit www.queenslandevents.com.au.
Round 13 will close on August 3, 2007, for events commencing between January 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009.
